Angels on the Backroads Vol. 3
--
Mounds Landing to Crawford Street

Volume 3—Mounds Landing to Crawford Street

Mounds Landing was right where the Levee broke as it ushered in the waters of the Mississippi River and flooded much of the Delta to a depth of 50 feet.  But this album doesn’t start out with the thundering rush of water.  We’re sitting on the bank of the Mississippi River early in the morning.  You can’t tell just how peaceful and quiet the surroundings are until the silence is broken by the piercing call of a bird.  The sound resonates in Eddie’s old National Steel guitar.

We’re in the Delta still, but we hear quite a few urban voices as the wanderers leave home.  There’s also the changing face of this country blues as it migrates to the regions cities and beyond.  There’s variety here you would never expect from the voices of Charlie Patton and Big Bill Broonzy from Jimmy Reed and the Mississippi Sheiks... Willie Love, Skip James and Furry Lewis.  Variety spawning from this “leaf shaped” bit of land known as the delta of the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers.

We finally surface from the depths of the Delta and crawl our way up to Vicksburg on the hill.  The album ends with our cover of Bo Diddly’s raucous rendition of the Legendary Willie Dixon’s tune, “Can’t Judge a Book by the Cover.”

It’s still hot!
